Casio 76-Key Electronic Keyboard with Adaptor and Stand

Casio 76-Key Electronic Keyboard with Adaptor and Stand Review

I got this for my son to start piano lessons, and was told by the teacher to get a 76 key keyboard with touch-sensitive keys, and this was the cheapest one with the best reviews. And I agree with those reviews - this is a great value keyboard.

It is a nice large keyboard with nice wide keys - feels like a piano, not at all like a mini-one or a toy. My son did his practice, then I took over an reclaimed much of my own childhood lessons in one evening! I like the three-step lesson - they are not hard to setup. And the thing overall isn't hard to get going. You just plug it in and you have piano sound. Haven't tried all the rhythms and things, but it feels like a good quality item, not cheap and plastic.

The stand is solid, but the keyboard itself isn't heavy to lug around, which is good for us.

Much recommended.

01/12/2010
A year later, and this keyboard has held up extremely well. A while back my son's piano teacher commented that she normally can tell which students have a keyboard at home instead of a piano, but she couldn't tell in my son's case. I think it's because the keys have a nice piano-like feel to them. We have carried this thing around a lot, and it has withstood that well. I still highly recommend.

Kurzweil 88 Note Digital Stage Piano, Hammer Action Keys, 64 Programs, 64 Voice Polyphony, Includes Two 6 Inch Speakers and Stand, Black and Chrome

Kurzweil 88 Note Digital Stage Piano, Hammer Action Keys, 64 Programs, 64 Voice Polyphony, Includes Two 6 Inch Speakers and Stand, Black and Chrome Review

Now that all Kurzweil's can be layered and split, their glaring weakness is all the more conspicuous. The company, in my opinion, makes the best digital pianos--in terms of sound, versatility, and keyboard "feel"--but with the most convoluted, incoherent, least helpful instructions. Guaranteed to lead to many all-nighters for musicians just trying to "set up" the keyboard for the next day's gig, which may not have a bass player or drummer.

If you have q friend, or a knowledgeable techie/gear-head who works cheap, by all means hire him. The manual, as usual, looks like it's been written by a committee. After talking about the most "powerful" dimension of the keyboard as its adaptiveness to set-ups, it fails to explain or illustrate how to construct sounds in the favored "set-up," or "500," mode rather than the more limiting "performance" mode. It gives no directions or helpful illustrations on how the user might be able to use one of the factory set-ups (all of them unusable) as a "template" to help the user with the creation of his own more practical set-ups. It doesn't explain how to transpose a good acoustic bass sound up an octave into a playable range without having all of the notes in the treble, or right hand, also transposed, except into an unplayable range. It provides a paragraph on doing a "hard reset," so that the player can get rid of all the monstrosities he's created and start afresh--unfortunately the manual fails to provide the vital information that before the "reset" button will activate the instructions permitting a hard reset, the user must first depress the "Global" button. (By accident, and several hours later, I finally stumbled upon it.)

Whether the reader finds it merely curious or confounding, the manual will introduce and begin to discuss some of the specifics of splitting, layering, set-up programs, etc. Then in a late section of the book, the reader finds a paragraph stating that the instrument is capable of "layering and splitting, which means adding on another sound or dividing the keyboard into two or more zones so that different sounds can be played, a feature that can often be convenient for a musician, especially one who is playing in a show" (!!!). In other words, the paragraph sounds as though the authors are unaware that anything preceded it. Instead of specific instructions, we're given a reductive introduction that sounds like it belongs in the ad sheet! I's in details like this where Kurzweil seems determined to cut the corners, in the process cutting the frustrated user to shreds.

I could say that this latest Kurzweil gives me more problems when, during the middle of a fast-moving passage in the middle of a tune, I attempt to go from one program to another. Often the button doesn't register my quick press, the light blinks back at me when it should have changed--but for all I know I've programmed it wrong. The same goes for the sustain pedal. It's the slipperiest pedal I have yet to encounter on an electric keyboard. At one time, Roland marketed a pedal with a heel flap, which made eminent sense and was quite effective (enough reason to get rid of it in this inscrutable market). The bottom surface of this Kurzweil pedal is less abrasive than Kurzweil pedals I've had with my K1000, PC2, or PC1se, squirting across a linoleum floor like a hocky puck repeatedly over the course of a 4-hour job (might as well have been 40). Maybe that's the way they like them in Minnesota.

M-Audio Prokeys Sono 61

M-Audio Prokeys Sono 61 Review

I got the ProKeys Sono to use during a temp, out-of-town work stint and wanted something I could play by itself (that has its own on-board sounds) and also use to drive the Reason and Sonar software synths on my laptop.

Well, after many months of testing (through real use) I have to say it passed with flying colors (or 'colours' for our 'Commonwealth' friends).

Keyboard features include:
- 61 note keyboard with a very playable semi-weighted action somewhere between synth and hammer keyboards (well, based on the synth and hammer action keyboards I've played)
- 5 higher quality built-in sounds (grand piano, bright piano, electric piano, organ, clav)
- A set of lower quality (but still fairly usable in my book) General MIDI sounds
- 3 Adjustable settings for how the keyboard responds to velocity
- 2 stereo line-ins (RCA jacks) for getting audio into your computer to record
- 1 XLR jack for plugging in a mic
- 1 quarter inch instrument jack
- 2 quarter inch headphone jacks
- 2 quarter inch outs for monitoring the sounds coming out of the computer as well as the built-in sounds from the keyboard

I've mostly used ASIO4ALL drivers prior to buying this keyboard, which gave pretty decent performance and acceptably low latency (the delay between hitting a key on the hardware keyboard controller and hearing any software synth sounds from the computer) for playing. Happily, the ASIO driver for the ProKeys Sono delivered even LOWER latency than the ASIO4ALL drivers I had been using.

So, with the decent construction quality, the playability of the keyboard, and the better driver performance, I admit I'm quite happy with the thing. I also occasionally used the line inputs to record from an external hardware synth module, and had no problems. Some people might whine as the resolution is only 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, but having worked with way-noisy cassette 4-tracks as a teen, CD quality is still fine by me.

The one thing I didn't ever test was plugging a microphone into the thing. I had a Samson G Track USB Microphone (which I've also reviewed on Amazon) and used that exclusively for vocals while I was on the road. Therefore I can't comment on the amp quality.

Lastly, when I just felt like playing a bit, it was nice to tinkle around on the piano without having to turn on the laptop. The piano sound quality is VERY playable, with the only drawback being the 20-note polyphony for the 5 high-quality sounds (the General MIDI sounds have 40 note polyphony).

Negatives? No LCD or LED display for helping change/configure MIDI settings, or selecting the General MIDI sounds. It's workable without the display, but it would definitely help to see the values you've entered. And because of that drawback, the ProKeys Sono really is best mostly for playing soft synths, not controlling a whole soft recording environment

Summary:
Great option for driving soft syths with the added bonus of some on-board sounds and also serving as a PC/laptop audio interface. If you want more hands-on sliders and buttons for controlling your software synths and recording software, I'd go with a different option, but for the niche this keyboard is trying to fill, it does a pretty good job. Though it's probably only a 4-star rating for overall performance, the fact I had ZERO problems using it with my computer (which is RARE nowadays) bumps it up to "barely a 5".

Yamaha PSRE323 61 KEY ENTRY LEVEL PORTABLE KEYBOARD

Yamaha PSRE323 61 KEY ENTRY LEVEL PORTABLE KEYBOARD Review

Don't let the fact that this machine is an "entry-level keyboard" hinder you from purchasing it. It can be played and enjoyed by beginners and advanced players alike.

As stated in my previous reviews, I have owned many Yamaha and Casio keyboards in the past 25 years or so. This is the best portable I've owned yet and I can't wait to take it out on a gig in late August.

The piano sounds very much like the higher-end digital pianos for which Yamaha is known. Many of the voices and features on this board are ones found in my Yamaha DGX-500. The only minor complaint I have is that the volume level could have been increased a little. But one can compensate by using an amplifier or speaker if necessary.

I was quite impressed with the wonderfully orchestrated built-in songs. One can listen to them for pure enjoyment or learn to play them using the lessons built into the instrument. Personally, I don't use the lesson feature, but it's there for those who want it.

In summary, if you want an affordable, lightweight keyboard to tote around, this is definitely the one to buy. The sound quality is very good for a keyboard in this price range. You won't feel as if you're playing a toy when you perform, and there are really neat intros and endings to enhance your performances. They are the same ones found on the better Yamaha instruments. This is not always true with the Casio instruments.

Another thing, when I purchased this keyboard from Musician's Friend, since Amazon.com didn't have it as yet, I had to buy the adapter separately. This shouldn't be. There weren't even any batteries with it. How is one to play it after getting it out of the box? It would stand to reason that there should be at least one type of power supply included in the box. Fortunately, I knew enough to read the full description and bought the adapter along with the instrument and got them both delivered on the same day, thank goodness.

Buy this great keyboard. I know you'll be very happy with it.

Korg LP350 Home Lifestyle Piano Overview

The Korg LP-350 is designed to visually complement nearly any living space. Less than 11 inches deep, the slim-line styling is both space-saving and efficient. Yet in spite of its slim-line profile, the LP-350 is equipped to provide a robust and accurate piano performance, complete with grand-touch action, all three pedals, and a powerful speaker system to deliver a rich piano sound. The LP-350 digital piano is available in two colors - classic black, or a restful and elegant white - each with metallic silver accents that add a modern touch. The LP-350 features our finest piano touch and feel, using our RH3 (Real Weighted Hammer Action 3). Just as on a traditional grand piano, the keyboard of this digital piano provides a heavier playing touch in the lower register, becoming progressively lighter towards the upper keys. Refinements designed for capturing rapidly repeated strikes ensure that the pianist's expressive abilities will not be impaired even during fast passages. Three levels of touch sensitivity are available using the Key Touch Control function, allowing you to customize the dynamic response to your own playing style. As a measure of environmental responsibility, Korg does not use lead in the keyboard hammers. The internal stereo sound system of the LP-350 digital piano features two large 10 cm speakers powered by a pair of 11-watt amplifiers. These speakers are housed in a bass-reflex enclosure, providing extended low-end response for a deep, full sound. The position of the speaker enclosure below the keyboard allows the sound to envelope the entire piano, creating a more natural resonance.
