M-Audio ProKeys Premium Stage Piano Review

I am not a professional musician, just a hobbyist with a few years of instruction as a kid, and I like to play from time to time. I live in an apartment and wanted a keyboard with a quality piano sound that was portable, and would accept both PA speakers and headphones, could hook up to a laptop via usb and yes, looked good.

This keyboard meets all those criteria for me. I bought it used (but in nearly new condition) for 0 which included the pedal and an x-frame stand. The keys are a bit heavy and yes the touch classical pianists expect from an acoustic piano isn't there. But there is some velocity pickup, it isn't like playing a cheap casio synth.

The piano sound, which I use 99% of the time, is solid. You turn the board on, and you're there. Playing immediately. No setup, no pushing buttons, just sit down and play, which is great.

For the stage performer, while it is a bit heavy, I think it would work well although I've never used it in that capacity. The keys are big and well spaced, and there are some "panic" buttons where if you get off-track with your settings, you can just jump to a known setting with a click. Good thinking from M-Audio.

If you want more voices, you can patch this in to your computer or a rack and apply whatever voice you want, or something you've created. Flexibility to grow.

Not having speakers built in means you can have audio quality as great as your wallet can burden. I have some small M-Audio units and they're very very good. I'm not sure what the technical term is, but the spacial quality when you're playing right or left hand side of the keyboard is nice, not too extreme, just a bit left or right as it would be in an acoustic.

Overall, this unit does what it's advertised to do, and it does it quite well in my opinion, at a great price. You can easily pay 00 and have a keyboard that isn't that much better. Before I purchased this I was looking at a Korg model, and happened to catch a band where the keyboardist was using one. He said he had tons of issues, two of the keys stopped working and it was heavy as heck. 00 keyboards have issues too, even if they are covered by warranty. I think a more direct competitor of this is the Yamaha (P90?) and there is another model that's all silver and wood-like plastic, which also has a great sound. Of course, Yamaha's keys are made to feel like the keys on a Yamaha acoustic, so if you don't like that feel, it might not be for you. They are also a bit more pricey, but not by much.

[With increased use, I'm becoming increasingly disenchanted with this machine. The manual spends more time on USB/MIDI/computer talk than the practical needs of the performing musician (as opposed to the "programmer"). The 16 set-ups are absurd as are the 64 programs--every spacey effect in the book but no engineer thought to include a simple piano/bass split + layered ride cymbal? The Autosplit feature (in "Program mode") is useless because, unlike the PC2, it doesn't raise the left-hand pitches by an octave while simultaneously lowering the right-hand pitches by same so that both hands will be playing in the appropriate register. Consequently, the user can transpose one hand but then discovers that the non-split notes are now in the wrong octave and can't be transposed separately. The only solution is to wipe the slate clean, start with a blank set-up, and construct each program from scratch. It's laborious work, best begun well in advance of any gig, and done on a program-per-day basis. So many musicians may as well forget about "Program" mode altogether and concentrate exclusively on constructing their own "Set-Ups." Finally, in the last couple of years Kurzweil has released or re-deployed the few specialists who knew anything specific about their complex computer-instruments. Whereas the company used to be responsive to befuddled users' questions, their customer support is now virtually non-existent. Kurzweil seems to be going out of their way, even with the PC3, to limit their instruments to advanced computer specialists or to musicians who simply push the buttons and play whatever programs are available at the highest surface level.]

Until the SP2 appeared comparatively recently, I had claimed the Kurzweil SP76 as the least expensive keyboard that a self-respecting professional performer might be able to "get away with" on the job. Now I can revise that claim, bestowing the same on the SP2. The main advantage of the SP2? There are actually two: first, it doubles the number of voices (programs, patches, objects, or sounds, if you prefer), providing 64 instead of a mere 32 (the SP76 did not even have a vibes program); 2nd, it permits you to split the keyboard, assigning different internal sounds to the various zones created by the split.

The SP2 costs about 33% more than it's predecessor, but the above features make the hike worthwhile. Formerly, I was importing bass or vibes sounds from a module velcroed to the keyboard and spending tedious hours with the MIDI set-up. No longer. And for "popular" music, 76 keys is all you need; 88 weighted keys will add at least 20 pounds to the package. I would have purchased a PC1se, a PC2, or a PC3 with 76 keys except for all of the gratuitous add-ons and complications (these are "programmers'" hobby kits) plus the extra weight. With the SP2, I can still, as was the case with the SP76, toss the instrument in a gig bag and set up in no time (I've grown out of the need to haul monstrous, heavy keyboards, sometimes just to play Basie fills in a big band!). If I'm ever awarded a roadie, I'll pick up a Roland RD700 or Kurz PC3x or Korg M50 (the fully weighted 88-key version) or the comparable Yamaha fully-weighted 88-key monster. But for now, safety, sanity and common sense all point to the SP2(76).

If you want more voices (time-consuming, complicated) and onboard speakers (like weighted keys, requiring dollies, helpers and hernias), get an SP3x. But now you've entered a nebulous territory that I've found even Kurzweil reps have no good answers for: when you get down to it, what's the difference between an SP3 and a PC3? (I find the SP, with its protruding knobs, a "gaudier" instrument than the PC design).

Back to the SP, Kurzweil shows its lack of understanding of a musicians' needs when the company doesn't provide a dedicated button permitting "layering" a ride cymbal on to the left-hand bass sounds walking 4/4 lines (the basis of ALL "swing," for Pete's sake). Instead the company throws in an automated drum machine (!) or trumpets its "Take 6" voices (a great vocal group, but I prefer to play them on my iPod or CD player. When I once played them in public on a Kurzweil PC2, the other musicians merely laughed at me--very dismissively). Until companies like Kurzweil take the music and the musician seriously, no real musician is going to record an album on any of their hundreds of Triple Strike "acoustic" pianos. Hundreds of great pianists have had the opportunity--from Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans to Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau, though none has lowered himself to that degree. (Even Stevie stuck to a concert grand piano (and nothing more) at the Michael Jackson memorial.)

Electric pianos are still the realm of techno-engineers and gear-heads. These companies have got all they can handle to recreate the sound of an analog synth or Rhodes, let alone come up with a respectable piano. But at least they could listen to, say, Ahmad or Monty Alexander or Benny Green and try to service an actual musician's needs. That'll change if consumers are more demanding, and if musicians are allowed to advise the designers and manufacturers.

[Warning: What ever keyboard you decide on, make sure there's a return/exchange policy you can live with. I've frequently been impressed by keyboards in the store, only to realize after the first job that this infatuation was no more than a single-night honeymoon. The keyboard will always sound different in a different room, with a different amp, with more time to allow your ears to be bombarded by what you thought sounded like a "real" piano. (If you plan to test at the store, bring your best headphones to plug into each piano.) Kurzweil wants its keyboards to be perceived as "performer's" rather than "programmer's" instruments. If so, consumers need to keep the pressure on their engineer / designers, demanding instruments suited less for an engineer than a musician.]

USB Port
For many musicians, the computer has become a music-making center. Connect the CTK-4000 to a computer using a USB cable and exchange MIDI data between the two devices. Send play data from the keyboard to music software running on your computer, or send MIDI data from your computer to the keyboard for playback.

Built-In Sampling
You can use the CTK-4000 to sample a sound from a portable audio player or other device, and then play the sound with keyboard keys. Sample up to ten seconds, and store up to five sampled sounds to keyboard memory.

You can also loop sampled sounds so they continue to play, or replace individual sounds on drum patches.

152 Built-In Songs and Ten User Songs
The CTK-4000 comes with a bank of songs for your learning and enjoyment, from classics like "Greensleeves" or "Auld Lang Syne" to holiday tunes like "Jingle Bells."

You can also record your own performances, using up to six tracks of different instruments.

Step Up Lessons
To master a song, it is best to break it up into shorter parts (phrases), master the phrases, and then put everything together. The CTK-4000 features a "Step Up Lesson" feature that helps you to do just that. The built-in songs are pre-divided into phrases to help you master keyboard play. Step Up Lesson takes you through practice of the right hand part, left hand part, and both hand parts for each phrase of a song. Master all of the phrases and you master the song.

Music Challenge Keyboard Game
Music Challenge is a game that measures your reaction speed as you press keys in response to on-screen keyboard indicators and fingering guide indications.

Auto Accompaniment
With Auto Accompaniment, simply select an accompaniment pattern. Each time you play a chord with your left hand the appropriate accompaniment will play automatically. It's like having a personal backup group along with you wherever you go.

You can also edit and save up to 10 of your own auto accompaniment patterns.

Auto Harmonize
Auto Harmonize automatically adds harmony to notes you play with your right hand, which adds rich depth to the melody of your performances. You can select from among 12 types of Auto Harmonize to suit the type of music you are playing.

Arpeggiator
The Arpeggiator makes it possible to play an arpeggio pattern automatically. There are 90 different arpeggio patterns from which to choose in order to match the music you are playing.

Transpose Function

Audio Input

Excellent Condition! Digital sampling keyboard enjoyed by many musicians & recording artist. The Black DSK-8 was the original Mirage, built beginning in late 1984, and is easily identified by its black metal case and all black buttons; it says "Mirage" on the top panel. The Ensoniq Mirage DSK-8 Digital Sampling Keyboard2 x 64Kb worth of grungy 8bit analog filtered sample mayhem - get the idea?Samples: 8bit samples, sampling rate variable from 10KHz to 33KHz.Memory: 2 x 64Kb memory banks, 1 per "keyboard half" (which can be altered to a single key if you really want). Love this keyboard! The touch sensitivity is easily worth any perceived compromises in sound quality compared to Yamaha or other comparably-priced products. The button layout & functionality is comprehensive without being overwhelming. Manual is good--and on-line. Backlit display is also a plus, as is the midi connectivity & modest recording capability. Sound quality of pianos & organs is especially good. Not sure if that quality would be maintained direct through a p.a., but it is certainly of high enough quality for home recording & use in small clubs. Sounds are very tweakable, and the advanced tones are for the most part immediately useful. Guitar tones are good. Obviously more expression is possible playing an actual guitar, but here again the touch feature helps--if you hit the keys hard, you get a much more dynamic response than from playing lightly. Sustain pedal is very useful for not much money. Back is tapped for two retention bolts for use on a stand, but I would be more comfortable gigging with it in a flight case of some sort. Casio calls this keyboard "high-grade," and that's an accurate assessment--it's much better than most keyboards in the 0-200 price range, and is definitely not a toy but a real, expressive musical instrument.

This is the second one I have purchased for family members. The quality is excellent. The "AD" at the end of the model number designates that it also comes with an AC adapter which was a requirement for us. There are a great selection of instruments in various tones and learning tools to teach you how to play the prerecorded instrumentals that are also included. There is also a set of great sounds that can be used for fun, from squeaking doors to cow sounds. It is a great keyboard and far exceeded our expectations for the price Amazon sale price was 4.00. Make sure you research and get a compatible stand. We did, but my brother-in-law could not use the stand because he couldn't get his particular wheelchair under enough. He uses it on a table. Great fun for all ages!

As the other reviewers have said, this is a great keyboard for the beginner or the person who just wants to play around. If you are looking for a professional keyboard, this is not for you.

I recently decided to learn piano and bought this keyboard as a good starter keyboard (instead of paying thousands of dollars for a real piano). I was pleasantly surprised. The sound quality is excellent. The speakers won't blast you out but they are strong enough. Also, the instrument sounds are very realistic for an electronic keyboard. The grand piano sound sounds more like a piano than the old upright I practice on at a friend's house.

The number and variety of the sounds, beats, and songs is good. The play-along feature is great! You choose a style (with drums and bass). You can then intro into the song. There are always two different tempos to switch between with short breaks to transition from one tempo to another. So at the push of a button, you have a backing band for whatever you want to play. This was nice as I am practicing basic jazz improvisation and it is good to have a backing beat to work with.

The keys and displays are set up intuitively and after about 15-30 minutes of playing around, you'll know where everything is and what you need to do.

The keys are well spaced and have a touch sensitivity that works well.

Alesis Fusion 8HD 88-Note Keyboard Workstation

Alesis Fusion 8HD 88-Note Keyboard Workstation Review

I bought my Fusion about 4 months ago when I learned that Alesis was likely discontinuing the series. So why am I writing a review on a probably-discontinued product? Because I want to lament the premature demise of a keyboard that was definitely before it's time. And it was unfortunately a product released before investing adequate time QC'ing the thing, as the Fusion operating system was still quite buggy when it was first put on the market in early 2005. The sad part is they FINALLY fixed most of the bugs and the keyboard had the support and backing from Alesis it should have had from the start about 2+ years after it was released. By that time, unfortunately, the word-of-mouth reputation for the Fusion was already mostly bad, and trying to recover from that "bad press" appears to be a struggle Alesis is about to give up on.

I'm a fairly adept synth guy though far short of "expert". I have some experience working with and programming sample-based synths, analog synths, and even PD (phase distortion) and FM (freq modulation) synths. I have a few Alesis products, a couple Moogs, and even an old Casio VZ-10 and Yamaha's FS1R and DX200. I love tinkering and plinking when time allows (that pesky full time job gets in the way) and have a decent ear for mostly getting the sounds I want. Despite using a few soft synths, I admit I prefer hardware synths.

Though I ended up with a Fusion 6HD this review applies to the OS and electronics of both the 8HD and the 6HD as they're identical. I went through 2 Fusion 8HDs that both had problems with their keyboards. The black keys struck with a higher velocity than the white keys, and any highly velocity-sensitive programs (like pianos) sounded out-of-whack because the black keys were noticeably louder than the white keys. Checking out Fusion forums, I learned this isn't/wasn't an uncommon problem unfortunately.

SO...with a little bit of history and background, what do I really think of the Fusion?

Well, mostly I'll comment on the synthy-ness of this keyboard, which is its real strength (it's also a sequencing workstation with multitrack recording capability). The ratio of programmability versus price on this thing is/was incredible. What I paid (<0) offers more power and programmability that my Roland Fantom X6 and literally at less than half the price. It has 4 synth engines including analog modeling (for those classic squeaky, squelchy synths sounds), sample-based playback (for more realistic instrument emulation), frequency modulation (for those DX7 klangs, rings and other metallic weirdness), and even physical modeling (mathematical emulations of wind instruments). The options for routing and modulating the sounds are incredible and the interface for programming is fairly decent (on a 1-10, I'd give it a 6 or 7). The modulation table lets you route almost anything to modulate/affect an expansive list of sound parameters, as well as letting you program modulations for the modulations. The different filters offer some impressive frequency sculpting to any of the different synth engines (FM as well), and the effects are more than adequate to help polish up the sounds.

And how does it sound? Well, that's a bit subjective (ok, QUITE subjective)...the analog still sounds virtual to my ears, but smoothly so. It's a fine complement to real analog and a suitable substitute in most instances. The sample playback is fine and obviously largely dependent on the samples used. The included samples are decent, though nothing spectacular, but fortunately Alesis offers software for easily importing popular sample formats. The FM is VERY nice. I'm a fan of the less obvious uses of FM (not the painfully overused "DX7 Rhodes" piano from the 80's) and this thing is 10 times easier to program for FM than any of the old Yamaha DX keyboards. Lastly, Physical Modeling on synths hasn't really been explored much since Yamaha tinkered around with it a bit (the VL1, I think), so it's nice to see it added as an option. To my ear, the sampled flutes and oboes still sound better than the physically modeled ones, but if you get creative with the PM, you can create some truly weird and wicked sounds.

If you're new to synths, the technical details won't necessarily make sense, but my main point for writing this is if you're in the market for a VERY powerful synth for way little money, this is definitely one to consider. As of this writing, a few music stores are still offering the 8HD model, and the 6HD can easily be found used for half a grand.

Kudos to Alesis for the vision to create such a synth, but bad on them for the buggy realization of that vision. They finally mostly fixed the problems, but for the Fusion product line it might have been a little too late.

So, to round it all up...if you're into crafting, tweaking, brewing your own sounds and don't mind diving into a keyboard a bit, this is an AWESOME gadget to let you do so. If you're mostly looking for a nice pallet of pre-manufactured sound colors, this will deliver somewhat (especially with the free download-able banks offered by Alesis) but there are other keyboards (Fantom or Motif) that offer more in that department, albeit for more money.
