Gourd Kalimba Review

Gourd Kalimba Feature

  • Gourd, 9"-12" tall
  • Diatonic Scale in the Key of C.
  • Clear finish that can be oiled or decorated by painting or wood burning
  • Designed to withstand moderate abuse by young children
  • The tines, or keys, are tempered spring steel, hand cut, and rounded

Gourd Kalimba Overview

Each kalimba is handcrafted in Arkansas. They have a clear finish that can be oiled or decorated by painting or wood burning. They are designed to withstand moderate abuse by young children and so are better for use in schools than the more rustic African ones. The resonators on the larger kalimbas are carefully selected hard shell gourd or coconut. The tines, or keys, are tempered spring steel, hand cut, and rounded. A special non-loosening nut in the bridge makes for easy retuning. The Arkansas kalimbas are all tuned to a Diatonic Scale in the Key of C.

The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Several reeds or tines are plucked with the thumb or fingers, and the reed vibrations are amplified by a hollow box resonator or a sounding board. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. The tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch.

8-note Board Piano Kalimba Set with Songbook and CD

8-note Board Piano Kalimba Set with Songbook and CD Review

I received this instrument about 2 days ago. I have been playing for about 7 hours total now. The book is easy to follow, the CD provides help if you can't get the tempo down. This instrument sounds really clear and beautiful. The book also covers everything from maintaining the instrument, tuning(The instrument is already pre-tuned to standard C scale), and chords. I expect this instrument to accompany me a long time . It's worth getting if your a beginner.
